Kata serves delectable Mexican interpretations of Japanese dishes

14. Kata

Fresh, raw seafood is plentiful in Baja, but when you crave an experience that’s closer to an American-style sushi restaurant, Kata satisfies. Everything else being equal, Kata has better ambiance, service and cocktails than its nearest competitor, Noah’s.

📍C. Ravel, about 0.15 mile south from the main road through El Pescadero

15. Carnitas Machin

Cuisine: Carnitas Tacos | Price: $ | Features: Quick, Great choice for takeout

Eating at Carnitas Machin conjures serious Anthony Bourdain energy. This humble roadside eatery does one thing (shredded pork tacos), and they do it expertly. What Carnitas Machin lacks in ambiance, it makes up for with tender and juicy pork, handmade tortillas and an excellent toppings bar.

At Cerritos Beach Inn’s Sunset Restaurant, the food and cocktails are fine, but (*looks over shoulder and leans closer*) shhh… your meal is an excuse to whale watch from the inn’s hot tub. Please be super respectful and don’t ruin this “hot” little secret of ours: order food and drinks, tip well, and keep your volume down.

21. Birria Los Compadres

Cuisine: Birria | Price: $ | Features: Affordable, Authentic

If you’re near Pescadero, you can get your birria fix at Los Compadres instead of driving to Todos. This little food stand can be busy but it’s a controlled chaos. When you’re ready to order, step up to the counter and start ordering as soon as you get the slightest acknowledgement from the staff.

The sweet bean empanada is perfect every time at La Garita.

23. La Garita

I finally understand why La Garita is frequently mentioned in local online groups. Ever since my first visit, I find any excuse to go back. The bean empanadas and tamales steal the show.

Fresh and homemade dishes are served at the cleanest buffet I've ever seen.

31. La Generala

Cuisine: Mexican | Price: $ | Features: Scratch-made buffet

There’s usually a wait on weekends at La Generala, but if you time it just right, you can enjoy a plate of the breakfast buffet and then one from the lunch buffet when they switch at noon. They serve an excellent pozole on Saturdays.

Cuisine: Coffee | Price: $ | Features: Adoptable dogs

Cerritos Beach Dogs is a non-profit dog rescue. 100% of proceeds go to supporting the pups. At the time of writing this, their coffee is donated by a local coffee shop. It’s a great cause and so fun and play with the puppies up for adoption before heading to the beach.

📍Main road to Cerritos Beach, about a 1/4 mile before the beach

34. Taller 17

Cuisine: Coffee, Bakery | Price: $ | Features: Take out only, Kind staff

Good coffee and absolutely stellar baked goods in the heart of downtown. Sometimes they sell out of certain items, so get there early for the full selection.

📍C. Centenario at C. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Downtown Todos Santos
